So I just finished reading Heart of a Chief. At first I didn't know what to expect, but I really enjoyed this book. I thought that the author did a great job describing the character's thoughts and also his emotions throughout the book. By the end of the novel, I found myself rooting for the main character and I was very glad when I found out that he was able to make an impact in his school. Prior to reading this book, I never really thought about school mascots and what they may represent to some people. Looking back, I remember when a school near mine changed it's name from the chiefs to the huskies. I remember hearing a lot of people saying, "Why does it even matter. It's not like we're offending them." After reading this book, I feel much more aware of the issues that Native Americans have with having mascots. I would definitely incorporate this book into my classroom. I think that it's a great example of the fact that one person can truly make a difference!
