I think that the insider/outsider debate is very interesting. Although, I believe that the people who have experienced and incident or have lived in it would probably be able to best describe it in detail and with validity, I also believe in teaching others about other cultures. I think that as long as someone makes an honest and true effort to get to know a culture or group of people, that they are just as capable to write a book concerning this specific culture. As a Brazilian, I would not be opposed to having an American, for example, write an essay about my country as long as he/she had made an honest effort to get to know as much as possible about my country. After reading many autobiographical poems in class, Nikki Giovanni's poem, really stuck out in my head. In this particular poem, Giovanni states that she does not want a "white" person to ever write about her story. Although I believe that this is a valid point, what makes Giovanni believe that a "white" person did not experience similar emotions and or lifestyle as her. I believe that the insider/outsider debate is very interesting and also somewhat controversial and I am really excited to further explore it in our classroom!
